Lo más importante: Había una demo en un cajón desde hacía tres años. Bruno se entera de que Gaga va a sacar disco. En un principio piensa que la canción puede encajar en la película o en el disco que va a salir con la película (habría sido un desastre para la canción probablemente...):

That is, until they caught wind that Lady Gaga was working on last year’s “Joker: Folie à Deux” film, and Mars thought the idea could be a good pitch for either that project or Gaga’s accompanying “Harlequin” album
El productor D'Mile y Bruno empiezan a trabajar en la demo, que al principio era bastante diferente. Luego llaman a Gaga que llega con el productor de Mayhem Andrew Watt. En Variety lo cuentan de manera dramática:
When the pair arrived with Gaga’s fiancé Michael Polansky late one night in early 2024, Mars played the bones of “Smile” for Gaga, who wanted to start work on the song right away. Both Fauntleroy and D’Mile describe the session as particularly unusual for an artist of her caliber, as they’re used to previewing an already recorded demo for a musician over speakers.
“She was like, ‘Let’s go to the piano,'”
The vibe in the room was collaborative and fast-paced, to the point that the second verse was written in a few hours. “It was like some Quincy-Michael shit,” recalls Watt, “with Bruno jumping in the booth, then her jumping in the booth and going back and forth. There was a point where we were all on guitars and she was on the piano. It was like being in Fleetwood Mac or something.”
Después de aquella noche Gaga y Watt rehicieron su parte por separado y luego Watt y D'Mile se volvieron a juntar para afinar lo que quedaba... Y chimpún.
No se explica por desgracia cuándo se decide meter en Mayhem. Probablemente en el último momento. Pero por lo que se cuenta la canción fue pensada para que acompañara un trabajo de Gaga.
Ya conocemos por lo menos un poco mejor la historia de una canción tan importante. Era una pena que quedara sin saberse.
