In 2001, Destinyâs Child were the biggest girl-group in pop, presiding with three-part harmonies, deconstructed R&B, and sharp celebrations of autonomy and self-love. That spring, the trio released their third studio album, Survivorâtheir first with the classic lineup of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, and an adventurous blend of hip-hop, soul, blues, and gospel.
During a year that took the trio around the world, they also found time to record 8 Days of Christmas, a 12-track album that mixes holiday standards with originals. Itâs similarly wide-ranging, full of joy and tension, rich harmonies, and percussive vocal lines. The singers share lead duties, and itâs also one of the first times the world heard from Beyonceâs 15-year-old sister, Solange, in a smooth take on âLittle Drummer Boy.â Its highlight is the groupâs epic a cappella rendering of the ominous Christmas classic âCarol of the Bells,â here retitled âCarol of the Bells a.k.a. Opera of the Bells.â In its grand sweep, Destinyâs Child belt out lush chords and bustling staccato melodies, weaving in and out of each other with weight and light. Itâs 8 Days of Christmasâ closing track, but an apt entry point into an essential collection.
