Review of Madame X - 5/5
Madame X is an eclectic, hypnotic piece of art with organic instruments and the richest production of her career. Reminiscent of Ray of Light, the album has long and swirling tracks that take you on a musical journey. The singles do not do the album justice. They are definitely the most 'radio-friendly', whereas the album does not cater at all to the GP.
Medellin is a solid lead single, it's the most commercial and a relaxed way to open the foreign world of Madame X.
God Control is perfection: 'Nothing Fails' meets Confessions on a Dance Floor. It's a soaring 6 minutes of political statement against gun control with medieval choirs. Batuka is an enchanting African-sounding gospel song with heavy drums about seeking peace in life. "It's a long way, it's a long day. Will we win this race?" "Lonely is the path to come to you" sings Madonna on the weird, haunting folk song Killers Who Are Partying. It's not targeted on Islam specifically at all, it's just comparing herself to minorities and saying that she will stand up for them. Madonna delivers the evocative line: "I'll be a woman if she's raped and her heart is breaking". The album has no weak moments at all. Crazy is a French-inspired bop. Faz Gostoso and Bitch I'm Loca are fun, upbeat pop songs. I Don't Search I Find is very similar to Vogue but with an Erotica rap and fresh lyrics.
Come Alive is a beautiful, uplifting pop song with a choir where Madonna claims her rightful spot as Goddess of Pop: "I am in the sky where I ought to be at." "Come alive" indeed, after exploring traditional pop and beats with Hard Candy, MDNA and Rebel Heart, Madonna is back on top with this artistic and exotic masterpiece. Queen M is setting the standard for music of the Future.
