PITCHFORK SHUNS ANOHNI IN YEAR END TOP 20 (BY GENRE) LISTS DESPITE 9/10 REVIEW EARLIER IN YEAR
Pitchfork gave the highest scores of 9/10 this year to the following eight artists' new albums:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (9/10), Kanye West (9/10), Anohni (9/10), A Tribe Called Quest (9/10), Bon Iver (9/10), Frank Ocean (9/10), Chance the Rapper (9.1/10), Radiohead (9.1/10)
All in all, eight all-male projects and one transwoman. No ciswomen at all received a 9 or above.
Every single one of the bands above has appeared in Pitchfork's end-of-the-year-by-genre lists except Anohni, who was not listed within the top 20 of any category, despite receiving from Pitchfork the highest album ratings of the year in both genres she was assigned to: Pop/R&B and Experimental. Besides Anohni, only Frank Ocean received 9/10 in the pop/R&B category. No one else in experimental received 9/10.
Perhaps the album has sunk in quality in Pitchfork's estimation since they first reviewed it so emphatically. Or perhaps Pitchfork or Conde Nast has taken issue with some aspect of the politics of the record. Perhaps they have been paid to line up with the Grammies in their top 5's. It would be interesting to hear how they justify this.
