"I rarely get political on here, but actually this is bigger than politics. The vast, untouched Central Highlands of Iceland are under great danger. Our government doesn't see the value of anything that can't be put in a bank account or traded for stock.
They want to sink half of the country under water from hydropower plants that we don't need to power aluminium shelters and factories that we don't need. And they do this under the false pretences of creating jobs and economy which can be more easily created in other much cheaper and less destructing ways (just those ways don't benefit them and their friends).
One of the first things this government did when they took power was to abolish the Ministry of Environment. This way they wouldn't have any opponents, but they forgot that the land doesn't belong to institutions and corporations. It belongs to us, the people.
We need to declare the entire highlands a protected area and we need to make this a priority before it's too late. We were too late for many beautiful gems that have already been destroyed but now it's time to say STOP.
Big thanks to Andri Snær Magnason, Darren Aronofsky, Patti Smith, Björk and Landvernd umhverfisverndarsamtök for organising the benefit event last night. It really mattered and I personally know several people who didn't realise the seriousness of the situation until yesterday.
Please spread the word!"
