"The V.M.A.s are usually good for a chuckle or two, and often for at least one revelatory performance, but this particular show felt claustrophobic, distant; I wanted neither to poke fun at it nor to take it seriously, but, rather, to slowly impale myself with a selfie stick. In her closing performance, Rihanna—who was the recipient of the Video Vanguard Award, a lifetime-achievement statue of sorts, although Rihanna is just twenty-eight—stopped singing to yell, “MTV! 2016! Ya’ll still with me, right?”
