Yes. It was a known fact around that time that the record execs thought Madonna over and Gaga a suitable contender to take over the throne. It's an ageist kind of place, well, same as society is. That said, Madonna wields a lot of power in Live Nation because she has been a shrewd businesswoman for ages. They hate her for that, as well.
I am not pinning the blame on anyone per se. But at the height of their success, an artist can - and many have done so - make some pretty interesting demands on the label, including pushing a release of another, "lesser" artist in the stable, for example.
Gaga wielded some serious mojo at the beginning of her BTW era, and when she said 'jump', people jumped. She was in an almost unprecedented position where her word was law, so to speak, and her ego was unchecked. Hence: most of the people pre BTW era who worked with her creatively left or were fired. I would not be surprised if whoever she perceived as a threat to her dominance may have been put in a compromising position.
It's only after losing all that promo money, the Interscope is now cutting their losses and counting the pennies. She was supposed to be their MOST successful artist of this decade. Because of making her their priority for a long period of time, other artists on the label were severely neglected.
Perez may be just flexing his muscles, but he may also be wanting to get paid whether he has or doesn't have sensitive info. If the label deems him to be a threat to her newfound popularity or reputation, the label may just pay him $ to be quiet.
In his defense, as much as I never liked him, he was a true early enthusiast of her work and his blog made her success much easier at the start. I do think he may have started supporting her without payola at first. He would publish her escapades and the rest of the media would pick it up. It was a marriage made in heaven. I think she ditched him when she felt she was too big and didn't need him anymore.
Just a note: LADY GAGA, as we know her, is in truth, a joint venture among Iovine, Universal Music CEO Doug Morris, and Sony/ATV publishing head Marty Bandier.
She has a 360 deal with Interscope, which, basically, means that they get a piece of EVERYTHING she does. They own her.
For this to work, she needs monster hits (no pun intended). She doesn't own her publishing, so it means that her main income is from sales, and touring.
At the moment, her comeback is on par with a big successful indie release, NOT what they need from her.
Her biggest hits were co-written with RedOne. Just Dance, Pokerface etc. And Rob Fusari, who got her the deal in the first place. He sued her for 30 million dollars. And Wendy Starland who discovered her to begin with, who also got zip.
No one of her original team is there now - her management may be great at merchandizing, but they know zilch about how to keep developing an artist. LaurieAnn Gibson developed her original choreography. Nicola Formichetti was the stylist. Perez was the cheerleader. None of those people are present anymore and there is a lot of bad blood left behind. Mind you, this happens all the time, and it can only be washed away by sweet success
Which is not happening.
Regarding Edge of Glory: Gaga lost it on set and decided to do it her way. A lot of those ideas were recycled in You and I later. She sent most of the crew home, including the director.
